Act I Scene V

How does Lady Macbeth react to Macbeth's letter? What is your first impression of her having read this scene?

  1. She is excited by the prospect that she may be Queen, and therefore turns her considerable ambition, and talent for manipulating people, to this task. She fears that MacBeth will be too weak to perform this task, and so asks spirits to help her gain the strength and cruelty to help her get to the crown. She portrays a cruel, evil and scheming figure, who seems to be immune to compassion and morals. She appears highly driven, and determined, and this is shown through her ambitious nature.

  2. She really likes the idea of becoming a queen and its like a dream for her, but all her good and knowledge turns evil just to make sure that this dream does come true. my first impression is that she looks like a really nice and kind woman but as soon as we were able to hear her thoughts this all changed.I thought of her as a evil person just wanting good for her self.

  3. Lady Macbeth realises that she could potentially be Queen. This clearly seems to get to her head. She wants Macbeth to murder the king so he can step onto the thrown yet she has doubts in her mind. She thinks he could be too kind. She knows Macbeth wants what she wants but is he willing to cheat his way to become king? She believes she can persuade him to do the deed. Lady Macbeth comes across as a stong-willed woman who knows what she wants and will do anything to get it. She does not care for anyone but herself and will do anything to suffice her needs and wants. She is quite manly in the fact that she is metnally strong. She speaks words of evil and is determined to do whatever it takes. Should she have the physical strength, we realise she would surely do the deed of killing the king herself.

  4. She seems overwhelmed by what he wrote to her at first, but as she reads on she starts to take in his words and realizes the possible out comes of some of the things in the letter. She then comes across as very strong and determined, even if her actions will be wrong. This shows that she is controlling and keen on becoming queen. She is clearly the dominant person in her marriage and is considering using her husband to become royalty

  5. Lady Macbeth draws on the power that her relationship with Macbeth provides. As her husband, he confides in her for help. Lady Macbeth uses these situations to her advantage, and with her malicious ways, persuades Macbeth to make decisions that he probably wouldn't have made ordinarily. She is a very dominant character in the play. Ironically, Macbeth is shown to be this courageous, strong willed man, however he doesn't have the courage to make his own decisions and stand up to his conniving wife.

  6. As Lady Macbeth learns of the weird sisters, she starts to plot an evil deed to ensure her place as the queen. Then she starts speaking in a very poignant tone about how she wants to become more like a man to be able to do the evil things she has planned. As readers, we judge lady Macbeth as a very determined, yet in a way insane character that is the opposite of her husband.
